The Modern Whig Party is the party for independent-minded voters who want to be affiliated with a moderate, mainstream, free-thinking party. The Modern Whig Party is not just another temporal third party. We encourage participation and offer leadership positions to qualified members. Our mission is to broaden public participation, put an end to the two-party system, and find rational solutions to the problems facing our country.
Throughout the centuries since its origin, the name of "Whig" has been attached to those who oppose tyrannical government. The term "Whig" dates back 1648, when a group of Scottish rebels called the “Whiggamores” marched on Edinburgh to oppose the rule of King Charles I of England.
It was subsequently used by the English party that opposed King James II's hereditary ascension to the throne. English Whigs favored the power of Parliament, as the assembly of the people’s elected representatives, over that of the unelected and unaccountable Monarchy.
The MWP is run by its members. The MWP is overseen by an Executive Committee and each state is overseen by a State Committee. The MWP is guided by its by-laws that ensure the party represents the membership and defines the actions and responsibilities of its committee leaders.
A Modern Whig is any American who is committed to a pragmatic, merit-based approach to problem solving that is neither clouded by ideological dogma, nor corrupted by special-interest money.
The Modern Whigs intend to be the party of moderate and independent voters from all walks of life whose interests have long been ignored.
We are not seeking to become yet another “third party” that languishes on the fringes with an axe to grind or pushes an extremist ideology. There already are many third, fourth and fifth parties of that kind.
The Modern Whig Party falls within a category of its own. We are neither liberal nor conservative and we reject such labels.
Our membership includes people from all over the political spectrum including Republicans and Democrats. We focus on common ground in solving problems instead of posturing and positioning, which leads to gridlock.
Modern Whigs are citizen-legislators with a deep respect for the vocation of public service who clearly distinguish themselves from other parties in the following ways:
Whigs are the only party whose agenda includes fundamental political reforms without which nothing else will change;
Whigs are not interested in power, they are interested in governing;
Whigs do not argue about whether government should be “big” or “small”, but whether it is doing its job;
There is a profound desire among the American people for a non-fringe political movement that caters to independent-minded people and solves problems in a rational manner without lobbyist influence and polarizing rhetoric. This is what you will find with the Modern Whigs.
The Modern Whig Party is essentially rewriting the book on building a viable, rational, and realistic political movement. A number of the third parties are very similar to the Republicans and Democrats in that they follow their own hard-lined ideologies and remain unabashedly antagonistic toward opposing political organizations. In contrast, the Modern Whig Party continues to focus on common sense, rational solutions ahead of such partisan bickering and ideology.
Idea parties have failed, personality parties have failed, so we designed a process or "methods" party to minimize that chance.
The owl throughout history has had powerful meanings. The owl represents knowledge, wisdom, foresight, and intelligence, something Washington and American politics in general seem to lack.
The last known national meeting held by the Whig Party was at the Owl Club in Brooklyn, New York, 1852. The choice of the Owl also symbolizes our connection with the older Whig party.

The old American Whig Party’s primary colors were blue and buff. In keeping with the old Whig tradition, the Modern Whig Party is keeping these colors in use.
The MWP is a party that focuses on issues that affect all Americans. We focus on rational, logical, and collaborative common sense approaches to issues, not ideology. We do not allow ideology to trump common sense and reason. We research, debate, and collaborate to find the most effective policy solutions to issues and support those effective policies; whether they are from the left, right, or a Whig policy.

Unlike most parties and political organizations we do not just spout out a policy based off of an ideology, we work differently. We are currently going researching policy options and proposals in our Whig Roundtables which will be launched soon. This will put forth policy ideas that have been researched and debated and found to be effective policies to keep Social Security established to be there in some way, shape, or form for future generations.

We generally do not put out exact specific numbers as a matter of internal business and strategy but as of January 2012 there are well over 30,000 nationwide in all 50 states. We continue to grow quickly and build our party in order to better serve America. Just like with any political organization some are not that active and some are very active. Our goal is to continue to encourage activity from our members and all citizens as this is the only way true change and the best government in America can be possible.
We are not Tea Party version 2.0 because we do not focus explicitly on promoting a conservative ideology like the Tea Party tends to do. We believe in pragmatism and promoting and working for what solutions and ideas are most effective, regardless of where they come from. We cherry pick between good liberal and good conservative ideas and solutions, but we also have the freedom and pragmatic approach to research and create our own ideas and solutions.
For 2012 the Whigs are not looking to support a candidate for President by themselves. To do so at this point would be a waste of resources that we could use to support multiple candidates for other state and federal offices. However, we are looking into the possibility of supporting a Whig Presidential candidate and working to get that candidate elected via Americans Elect. The Whigs have already run candidates for state and federal office starting back in 2008. The Whigs ran candidates for state and federal office also in 2010. These candidates ran as independent but were either Whig members or Whig supported independent candidates. In 2012, the Whigs also are running several state and federal candidates. These candidates can be viewed under the "Candidate" section of the website on the main navigational bar.
The Whigs already have one election victory; Ken Belcher won as constable for Lee County in Alabama back in 2008.

While we are not a "green" party, the Whig posture on energy independence and alternative fuels can be considered a "green" position. Modern Whigs view it as more of a national security/economic issue to be sure, and the reduced carbon footprint is a great side payment.
Many nations have set targets and we should be able to trump them all by espousing a " 25% by 20 " program where we set the goal at 25% of our petroleum liquids consumption by 2020. By then 2nd and 3rd gen biofuels ( not made from harvested corn!) should be well into their commercial phase.

The Whig Academy is viable. It is more than a possibility it is happening. Something like this takes a long time and extensive development before launching it. We are reaching out to policy experts and think tanks to see if they want to participate. We are also reaching out to colleges and also members with campaign experience to participate. We have the general outlines of what will be involved with the Academy and now we are working on fine tuning the actual courses within.
We are aiming to have the Academy up no later than Spring of 2012, hopefully earlier in the last quarter of 2011.

We are also working on more that are a little bit more in depth, but there is only so much you can put on a card. This will work great especially if you can print them off on thicker paper.
